REINDEER CHARACTERISTICS
The word “reindeer” is derived from an Old Norse word, “herein.” That translates to “horned animal.” While often considered to be different species, reindeer and also caribou are actually referring to the same animal. Caribou is a Canadian French word and comes from the Mi’kmaq word “Cariboo”, which means “scratchier.” This is a reference to the herbivore’s characteristic digging behavior when they look through the snow for vegetation. If you compare reindeer photographs to those of Caribou you can see that there really isn’t much to differentiate them with. In fact, differences between them arise in their geographies, which can also range from tundra to woodland.
LIFE ISN’T EASY FOR A REINDEER
Firstly, life in a freezing habitat definitely does not sound livable to you or me, but that doesn’t necessarily apply to the reindeer. You can see how they survive in a cold environment like in our picture of reindeer titled, “Responsibilities”. These hardy herbivores have evolved to adapt to the unforgiving tundra and even make it look easy. Most importantly, Mother Nature equipped them with some tools, which perfectly prepare them for their harsh environment.
For starters, they have specially adapted noses that warms up the cold air they breathe in prior to it entering their lungs. This also condenses the humidity in the air to help moisten their mucous membranes and keep them functional. Additionally, their thick shaggy fur also traps air, which acts as a fantastic insulation system. It also gives them added buoyancy in the water whenever they find themselves crossing a river or lake during migration. Lastly, their hooves are specially designed to adapt to the changing seasons and conditions too. During the warmer summer months, the ground is wet and their hoof pads soften up to give them an extra grip. Then during the colder winter season, the hoof pads harden up. This exposes the outer rim of the hooves. Which is able to dig into the snow and also helps them grip the slick snow and ice.
THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON REINDEER
I have always believed in giving back. When I began to realize how much damage has been done to the animals and also the planet due to climate change, I knew I had to do something. The direction led me to conservation groups and also nature organizations.
As a fashion photographer, I pay the models. In wildlife, I can not pay the animals in the content we create. so to give back, I’ve developed relationships with conservation organizations such as the Wolf Conservation Center, and also World Animal Protection.
A percentage of the sale of these reindeer fine art photography prints is donated to these organizations. So when you buy fine art photography and reindeer fine art photos from us, not only do you have an inspiring photo of some of nature’s finest creatures on your walls, but you will also be helping them. SANTA’S SURVIVALISTS
Show me a picture of a reindeer? Reindeer photos, reindeer pics, and reindeer pictures for sale are almost always synonymous with Santa’s trusted animals and also their significance to Christmas. The fairytale-like identity of these animals paints them as merry hardworking helpers that make America’s favorite holiday possible every year. When we think of pictures of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, we likely imagine him pulling a sleigh. Or we see a reindeer photo of the other reindeer resting in comfortable stables in the North Pole. Of course, in reality, these animals don’t have a jolly old caretaker to ensure that they make it through every winter. Unfortunately, there was no Santa and reindeer picture to be taken. Despite their sweet and also soft-story personalities, real-life reindeer have to face extreme conditions to survive their habitats. But I am so thrilled to share our pictures of real reindeer, overall reindeer photography, and reindeer fine art with you all.
INDIGENOUS IMPORTANCE
Reindeer art and reindeer art decor have been significant for much more than just Christmas marketing and also fairy tales. Indigenous people in many Northern parts of the world highly respect and also appreciate these herbivores. In Scandinavia and also Canada, the hunting of these animals fed and clothed indigenous people from prehistoric times until today. In fact, we can still find reindeer hunting traps from the Stone Age. Even today in Scandinavia, reindeer is a popular meat source. It is sold in many forms ranging from dried to also canned offerings. In North America, the Inuit used the caribou for food, clothes, building shelter, and even tools. All of these cultures used every part of the animal and also most importantly, highly respected them.
Lastly, reindeer photos, pictures of reindeer, and reindeer fine art photos have illustrated these essential animals for centuries. Modern-day reindeer photographs may have more religious undertones for the West. But these herbivores still hold much cultural relevance for indigenous people. It is important that our modern society learns to respect the animals we use and also commit to taking only what we need.
