They are made up of a dense, bony tissue called dentin (the same material that makes up human teeth). Whether jewelers and ivory collectors around the world want to admit it or not, a dead elephant is behind every piece of ivory. Every year more than 20,000 are killed for their tusks. The tusks then go on to be traded illegally on the black market. Despite measures being taken by governments, wildlife charity organizations, celebrity advocates, and international relief efforts, ivory still remains in high demand in several parts of Asia. Elephants like to live in small groups led by an elderly female called a cow. In elephant families, females are the leaders. Most of the males live together as bachelors separate from the females.
